Customs Intercepts 5,200 Live Ammunitions, Contraband Goods Worth N386m

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’ Owerri, has intercepted 5,200 live ammunition, 1,215 bags of foreign rice, a bullet proof Toyota Landcruser SUV and other contraband goods worth N386 million.  The Controller, Mr Yusuf Lawal, who confirmed this on Thursday January 7, while addressing the media in Owerri, Imo State capital said the seizures were made between November 23 and December 27, 2020.  "Having intensified its anti-smuggling operations, the unit intercepted 5,200 live ammunitions (cartridges of 30GR 70mm Calibre ) and various contraband with a duty paid value (DPV) of Three Hundred and Seventy Eight Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Thirty Five Naira only (N378,751,935.00) between November 23rd to December 27th 2020," he stated.  He said that the DPV of the bullet proof Landcruser and other three vehicles seized during the period was N221 million.   "Similarly, the unit through its interventions recover...

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) board has accused Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed of amending the country’s broadcasting code alone without due consultation. Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, chairman of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) board who addressed a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, August 13 over the amendments which include an increase of hate speech fine from N500,000 to N5 million and the provision for sub-licensing of all broadcast contents among others, said he received over 50 position papers for the sixth amendment of the code but none of the input was considered. Nigerian Government Gives Updates On WAEC, NECO Exams

The federal government has said it is working to bring the timetables for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations closer. Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this on Monday, while speaking at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) for COVID-19. “It requires six weeks to complete the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations. “We are working to bring the timetable closer. “I have just finished a meeting with the representatives of WAEC and NABTEB and I understand how that worries our parents at the moment and how anxious our children are to know what next,” Nwajiuba said. In April this year, the Nigerian government suspended both WAEC and NECO examinations indefinitely, in a bid to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

Following the demise of Oba Idowu Abiodun, a new Oniru of Iruland has been installed. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, crowned and presented the staff of office and instrument of appointment to Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, as the 15th Oniru of Iruland, Eti-Osa Local Government area of the state. See The States With The Highest Number Of Presidential Aides In Nigeria

Ogun, Adamawa, Oyo and Lagos states are currently topping the list of states with the highest number of presidential aides in an updated list prepared by the Presidency. The 142 aides on the list are attached to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); his wife, Aisha; Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo; his wife, Dolapo; Chief of Staff to the President; and a few ministers. An analysis of the list showed that Ogun, Osinbajo’s home state, topped the chart with 16, Adamawa, the home state of the President’s wife, Aisha, came second with 12, while Oyo State came third with 11 aides. Lagos came fourth with 10 aides while Kano followed closely with nine presidential aides to occupy the fifth position. Buhari’s home state, Katsina as well as Ondo state are tied in the sixth position with seven presidential aides each. 42 Suspected Cultists In Arrested Cross River

The Nigerian Navy Victory Ship (NNVS) has handed over 42 suspected cultists to the Cross River Government for onward investigation and prosecution. Briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Calabar, the Commander of NNVS, Rear Admiral Vincent Okeke, said the suspects were arrested on Sunday through a tip off by concerned individuals. Okeke, who was represented by Capt. Ibrahim Gwaska, said the Navy standby team was informed that the suspects were gathered in Akpabuyo local government area of the state for initiation and other activities. NYSC Extends Service For 24 Lagos Corps Members Over Disciplinary Issues

The National Youth Service Corps,(NYSC) Lagos, has extended the service year of about 24 Batch B Stream 1 corps members as punishment for undisclosed disciplinary issues. 18 other corps members have also been listed as having “pending disciplinary issues.” Batch B Stream 1 corps members are scheduled to pass out from Thursday, May 28. However, the service year of the affected corps members will be extended by between two weeks to four months. This was disclosed in a statement titled “Corps Disciplinary Committee Decision” signed by the state coordinator, Eddy Megwa. “Affected corps members (those with the extension of service year) are to report to NYSC, State Secretariat, Surulere on Wednesday, 27th May 2020 between 10:00 am to 11:30 to collect their respective letters of the disciplinary decision. The Saudi Arabian government has announced that it will reopen mosques outside the city of Mecca from May 31. Mosques across the kingdom had been shut for two months to limit the spread of coronavirus. The interior ministry, on Tuesday, said prayers will now be allowed to resume in all mosques outside Mecca from May 31. It said the country will end its nationwide coronavirus curfew on June 21, except in Mecca. The ministry said it will begin the gradual easing of the lockdown by lifting the curfew from 6am and 3pm between Thursday and Saturday. Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has said China will work with other G20 members to implement the debt service suspension initiative to ease the debt burden of Nigeria and other African countries. In a statement by China’s Consul General in Lagos, Chu Maoming, the minister said this while responding to a question asked by an African journalist at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual Chinese national legislative session on Sunday. Schools Will Reopen Soon But No Date Yet – Minister Of State For Education

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that there are plans to soon reopen schools nationwide, however, it won’t happen in two weeks as being speculated in some quarters. Nwajiuba, made the clarification on Thursday during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, following rumours making the round the Federal Government would reopen schools in the next two weeks.
