Fire on Saturday gutted a Moscow hospital treating patients infected with coronavirus, killing one. According to Daily Mail, hospital officials said the inferno started from a patient’s room, adding that the fire has since been put out. Sergei Sobyanin, the Mayor of Moscow, who confirmed the development on Twitter, said that all patients had been evacuated and would be transferred to other hospitals. “The causes of this incident will be thoroughly investigated,’’ Sobyanin added. COVID-19 has so far infected nearly 200,000 people and caused more than 1,800 deaths in Russia. Sadiya Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development, says the ministry has commenced cash transfer to the poorest households in the country to cushion the effect of the coronavirus pandemic. The minister said this during a press briefing by the presidential task force on the disease in Abuja, on Monday. Nigeria has recorded 111 coronavirus cases spread across 10 states and the federal capital territory. The country also recorded its second death from the disease on Monday. Farouk said the ministry has commenced advance payment of conditional cash transfer to the poorest households in the country. Former presidential aspirant and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari with the way his administration is handling the scourge of coronavirus in the country. At the moment, 65 persons have been tested positive for the deadly disease while the results of many others are being awaited. The Lagos state government has announced closure of schools over the outbreak of coronavirus disease. There are currently six confirmed cases of the disease in Nigeria’s commercial capital. In a statement on Wednesday, Folashade Adefisayo, attributed the development to moves to check the spread of the virus. “As part of the preventive measures against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Lagos State Government is closing down all public and private schools from Monday, 23rd March 2020,” the statement read. “The move becomes necessary to prevent our children and their teachers from getting more vulnerable to the pandemic. “It is important for parents to ensure that their children practise ‘social distancing’ while at home, wash their hands regularly or use hand sanitizers and observe high standards of personal hygiene. Lamido Sanusi says his dethronement as Emir of Kano is unjustifiable but won’t take legal action against the Kano State Government. The former Central Bank Governor, who has had a frosty relationship with Governor Umar Ganduje since 2017, was sent packing by the state government on Monday for “total disrespect for lawful instructions from the office of the state government”. Specifically, the Kano State Government dethroned Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, following an approval by the state executive council. It also cited Sanusi’s alleged refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the government without any lawful justification, which it said amount to total insubordination. The embattled National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has accused the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, of turning against him. Oshiomhole played a key role in Obaseki’s emergence, but both men have been at war since the governor indicated his interest in another term. There was a celebration in Obaseki’s camp, after an FCT High Court in Jabi, Abuja, suspended Oshiomhole as APC’s National Chairman. However, 24 hours later, Justice Lewis Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Kano State, set aside the ruling that suspended him. The family of the late Clement and Toyin Okhide, who were killed in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State on Tuesday, has appealed to the media to refrain from purveying wrong information on the incident and allow it mourn its dead. A cure has been found for coronavirus, says the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Pingjian claimed that Chinese scientists were working to develop a vaccine for the virus. According to him: “All things considered, the epidemic can be contained, controlled and treated. The Chinese nation has gone through great winds and waves and overcome countless difficulties. According to Punch Metro, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has come down on ex-governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, over his comment that the Western Nigeria Security Network code-named Operation Amotekun would lead to the declaration of Oduduwa Republic. The Police in Kano State have arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Musbahu, for allegedly killing his three-year-old son. Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident on Friday. He explained that the incident happened on Thursday at Mahaukaci Quarter in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State. Haruna said the suspect was in police custody and will be charged to court after the investigation. Speaking to the suspect, who admitted to have committed the crime, said he did it to save his son and himself from embarrassment as the child was born out of wedlock and he has no body to take care of him.
