Mikel Arteta and Arsenal must splash out £26.8m to sign the perfect Mesut Ozil replacement

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, inset, and potential replacement Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The Roma midfielder has been a source of creativity for the Serie A side this season.

We are not party to Mikel Arteta’s plans for his Arsenal squad but there is no denying that further options will need to be added in the next transfer window.

Uncertainty over the future of several key first team players, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Mesut Ozil, means Arsenal could go into the transfer window needing new recruits.

While Arteta and Arsenal will be keen to keep Aubameyang on the books past the summer, Ozil is another matter. The German finds himself out of favour, with little hope of a recall and finding a replacement for Ozil in particular means Arteta will need to track down a player who is a prolific creator.

Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has been linked with a move to North London, and there appear to be few better options out there.

The 23-year-old’s performances this season have caught the eye of a number of potential suitors, despite him suffering a metatarsal fracture in October which sidelined him until late November.

With 12 Italy caps to his name, Pellegrini would offer Arteta a range of options. He has experience as a deep-lying playmaker, box-to-box midfielder and further forward as an advanced playmaker.

Pellegrini’s performances this season suggest he would thrive well as further forward as a number 10 and could be a reliable source of creativity between defence and attack.

With Arteta’s preference so far being a 4-2-3-1 system, Pellegrini’s strength in chance creation could complement Aubameyang as well as Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe in attacking positions.

Just eight assists in Serie A this season may not seem the most impressive of records, but it is more noteworthy when you consider that Pellegrini has played just 18 matches.

Looking solely at a player’s number of assists in isolation can skew the perception of their creativity because of their reliance on the shot-taker to convert the chance provided.

As shown below, Pellegrini’s shot assist map illustrates where he tends to create opportunities for his team-mates.

The stars, denoting goals scored from the midfielder’s passes, sit at five because the shot assist map includes open-play passes only - excluding the free-kicks from which Pellegrini has assisted three times.

From the map we see that Pellegrini is wide ranging in his overall positioning when supplying opportunities for team-mates. Such a trait may be an encouraging sign for Arsenal, who have attacking options that tend to come from different areas - Aubameyang from the left, Pepe from the right and Lacazette often dropping deeper.

There are an additional three chances created by Pellegrini labelled orange and red to indicate the high quality of the opportunity, which could have pushed his assists numbers even higher had the shot-taker converted.

For Arsenal, a player with that flexibility and high volume of chance creation would be a suitable replacement for Ozil should he depart.

Furthermore, Pellegrini’s positional versatility as either an attacking midfielder or a box-to-box player makes him an interesting option for Arteta to explore further.

So far we have seen the new Arsenal boss subtly change a few elements to make his side more balanced between defence and attack.

But signing Pellegrini would mean he could employ further midfield options away from his usual 4-2-3-1 system as needed.

'I Tried My Best' - Arsenal Boss Arteta Believes He Did All He Could To Include Axed Ozil

The 32-year-old did not feature for the Gunners after lockdown and was subsequently omitted from the club's 25-man Premier League squad. Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta believes he did all he could to give Mesut Ozil a fair shot before he axed the German from his squad.  Ozil's name was not among Arsenal's 25-man Premier League squad that was released earlier this month, which followed the playmaker's exclusion from Arsenal's Europa League squad. As the 32-year-old enters the final months of his contract with the Gunners, it now appears likely that he has played his final game for the team. Ozil did play a part for Arsenal last season, at one point starting 10 consecutive Premier League games for the Gunners before the coronavirus lockdown in March. The playmaker did not make a single appearance for Arsenal after lockdown, however, but Arteta has still insisted he gave Ozil every chance to impress before he was omitted from his team. "What I can tell you that I...

Arteta Must Be Strong To Survive Allegri Rumours’ – Arsenal Boss Can’t Show Weakness, Says Smith

The former Gunners striker has urged an under-fire Spaniard to prove that he is the right man for the job and end links to an ex-Juventus coach Alan Smith claims it is “an open secret” that former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is being recommended to Arsenal amid their ongoing struggles, with Mikel Arteta told he is going to have to show no weakness in order to “survive” the rumours. The Gunners have continued to stumble out of the blocks in 2020-21, with their worst start made to a Premier League campaign. Inability to establish any kind of momentum has the north London outfit languishing in the bottom-half of the table and glancing anxiously over their shoulder at the drop zone below them. Unsurprisingly, questions are being asked of Arteta’s ongoing presence, with a rookie coach finding out the hard way just how tough life at the top can be. Arsenal have offered no indication that they are contemplating another managerial change, but Smith says potential successors – including ...

Arsenal's £72m Enigma: Arteta Right To Demand More From Mercurial Pepe

The Gunners' record signing may have scored his third goal of the season on Thursday night but his manager wants consistency across 90 minutes. Mikel Arteta’s answer was clear when asked what Nicolas Pepe needed to show in order to earn himself a regular starting spot in Arsenal's Premier League team. “Consistency,” said the Arsenal boss, when quizzed on the Gunners’ record signing, following Thursday’s night’s 4-1 Europa League win against Molde at the Emirates Stadium. It was a game that perfectly encapsulated the enigma that is Pepe. The £72 million ($95m) man was infuriating at times - especially in the first half - but just as he had done against Dundalk a week earlier, he popped up with an excellent goal. He also went on to add an assist for Joe Willock, a late strike which sealed a comfortable victory for Arteta’s side and all but booked Arsenal’s passage into the knockout stages. It was a classic Pepe performance and more evidence of why he remains such a puzzle in nort...
