COVID-19: We Don’t Know How Long This Will Last – FG

The Federal Government on Monday said it did not know how long COVID-19 would last in the country. The Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha, said this at a press conference he jointly addressed with the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, in Abuja where the government revealed that the country had recorded its second COVID-19 death. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as part of efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, on Sunday, ordered lockdown in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, and Ogun states. Students at Western Michigan University are mourning after a 25-year-old Nigerian Chemical Engineering student, Bassey Offiong, died of COVID-19 on Saturday in Detroit, according to Detroit News. According to his sister, Asari, the deceased told her he was turned down several times for the coronavirus test in the Kalamazoo area while living off-campus despite having fever, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Speaking, Asari said: “He said they refused to test him. One medical staffer told him he had bronchitis.” She added that Bassey had no known prior health issues. He was hospitalized at Beaumont in Royal Oak and spent the last week on a ventilator in their intensive care unit. On Sunday, the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Service Department confirmed his death due to coronavirus. First COVID-19 Patient In Oyo State Discharged

The Oyo State Government has announced the recovery of the index Covid-19 case in the state. Sadiya Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development, says the ministry has commenced cash transfer to the poorest households in the country to cushion the effect of the coronavirus pandemic. The minister said this during a press briefing by the presidential task force on the disease in Abuja, on Monday. The Police in Ogun state have arrested a masquerader for allegedly violating the federal and state governments’ order on social distancing and public gatherings. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed that the masquerader was arrested after he threatened to deal with the police officers if they dispersed his followers. UNILORIN Set To Produce N30M Hand Sanitizers For Kwara Government

The Kwara State Government under the leadership of Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq has contracted the Technical Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC) of UNILORIN to produce various sizes of hand sanitizers to combat Coronavirus outbreak. This development was made known by the Director of the center, Dr. Jamiu Kolawole Odusote, in the university publication, Unilorin Bulletin, on Monday. Dr. Odusote revealed that the hand sanitizer contract is worth over N30million. The Director expressed that the Centre has commenced action with immediate effect and promised that the consignment would be ready within a week. Dr Odusote explained that the arrangement was to produce four different sizes of hand sanitizer which are 150ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1,000ml.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday donated his former residence at the Presidential Hilltop, Ogun State, as Isolation Centre. He approved that the residence be used as an accommodation and treatment center for victims of coronavirus. Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has disclosed that the state’s coronavirus cases might increase to 39,000 in coming weeks if stringent measures are not put in place to stop the spread of the disease. Speaking at a press conference on Friday March 27, Abayomi stated that they are still tracing about 3,000 primary contacts of those infected with the disease. The Commissioner who disclosed that the mathematical projection was that the state could have up to 39,000 cases, said it might become a reality if contacts are not observing self-isolating or embracing social distancing. The Nigeria Medical Association of Nigeria, Kogi chapter, on Thursday, said 27 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever disease from nine local government areas of the state had been reported by the state epidemiologist.
